Boswellia

Boswellia serrata is a tree whose gums and resins have been commonly used for therapeutic purposes.

Quick facts

  • Boswellia serrata has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties
  • Improve mobility and reduce pain

Its richness in boswellic acids is associated with possible effects on inflammatory processes and joint pain.

It is commonly found in the form of standardized tablets or capsules to facilitate its consumption and dosage.

Properties of Boswellia serrata for joints

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of AKBA

AKBA is considered one of the key bioactive components of Boswellia serrata. Clinical studies in humans indicate that this compound could inhibit the synthesis of inflammatory mediators, such as 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and certain cytokines (Sengupta et al., 2008). By reducing the production of these molecules, joint inflammation and pain associated with conditions such as knee osteoarthritis are attenuated.

Reduction of inflammation and joint pain

Several clinical trials in humans have reported that standardized extracts of Boswellia serrata possess anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Furthermore, improvements in physical function and joint mobility were observed.

Improvement of joint function

Another clinical trial specifically evaluated a patented Boswellia extract (5-Loxin®), finding positive results in reducing knee pain, inflammation, and stiffness in patients with moderate or severe osteoarthritis (Sengupta et al., 2008).Conclusions

Boswellia serrata has demonstrated, in clinical studies, beneficial anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties for joint health, particularly in people with knee osteoarthritis. In addition to improving mobility and reducing pain, it could offer long-term protection thanks to its antioxidant potential.

The dose is usually between 300 mg and 400 mg per day of standardized extract, although it is recommended to adjust it according to the formulation and the advice of a healthcare professional.

In general, it is considered a safe supplement, with mild and infrequent side effects; however, additional precautions should be taken in people receiving other pharmacological treatments or who have chronic conditions.
